Almaty is Kazakhstan’s largest city, with a population of approximately 1.5 million, located in the southeast of the country, in the foothills of the Zailiysky Alatau.
Despite no longer holding the title of capital, Almaty remains the financial, economic and cultural nucleus of Central Asia.
The city is home to many business centres, theatres, museums, art galleries, exhibition halls and a plethora of entertainment venues such as cinemas, nightclubs, parks, restaurants and cafes.
Russian is widely used by government organisations and local self-government bodies in Kazakhstan, alongside Kazakh.
The air temperature in December in Almaty is most often minus: on average, according to previous years' data, -7 °C during the day and -9 °C at night. According to statistics, December is not very snowy: about 42 mm of precipitation falls. Vagaries of weather also happen: for example, heavy winter rain after snowfalls. When choosing what to take with you to Almaty, remember the onset of real winter and see the current weather forecast.
The official currency of Kazakhstan is the tenge. Purchases and all kinds of services must be paid for in the national currency.
Almaty boasts numerous round-the-clock exchange offices and many ATMs. Most malls and hotels accept bank cards such as Visa, Mastercard and Euro Card. However, if you plan to venture outside the cities, it’s advisable to carry cash in tenge.
The EEU (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Russia) imposes no restrictions on the amount of cash carried within its borders, and it is not subject to customs declaration.
Kazakhstan uses European standard (C, E, F) 220V/50Hz sockets.
